Between October 2015 & March 2016 there were 524 patients under the age of 17 from Greenside Group Practice, attending the A&E department. 181 of these attendances (34.5%) could have potentially been avoided, based on the time and reason of attendance. Parents are being advised to contact their GP surgery prior to taking their child to the A&E Department. This would avoid any unnecessary wait in the A&E Department for problems which can potentially be addressed by community services i.e. The Pharmacy First Scheme, which can deal with many minor ailments.
Also it would ensure the appropriate use of all health resources available allowing the A&E Department to focus on more serious and life threatening presentations.
